Bai Yutang is a fictional character from the 19th-century Chinese novel ''The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants''. Nicknamed "Brocade-Coated Rat" due to his good looks, he was the youngest sworn brother and the best martial artist of the "Five Rats". Though very righteous, he was also cruel, arrogant, impulsive and stubborn. Jealousy and narcissism drove him to a rivalry with fellow knight-errant Zhan Zhao, and he performed a number of heroic acts and spectacular crimes to test Zhan. Overconfident in his abilities, Bai was the only hero or gallant to die in the novel, as he was caught in the Brass Net Trap of Prince Xiangyang's Sky-Scraping Tower and shot to death by arrows. ==In the novel== Bai Yutang's older brother Bai Jintang (白錦堂) was a generous man but died early. Bai Yutang then wandered to Lu Fang's village at Hollow Island and became sworn brothers with Lu and 3 other talented men. Together they called themselves "Five Rats" and performed chivalric deeds, at times traveling around the country. Bai Yutang became outraged with jealousy upon hearing that Zhan Zhao had been honored by Emperor Renzong with the title "Imperial Cat". To prove himself, he went to the palace to create trouble in order to have Zhan Zhao pursue him.
